Company Mission Statements
A Misssion Statement may be less important than a company idea. For instance, the idea of Disney is "having fun" and this reaches every area of the organization and is understood by their customers. A good company Mission Statement therefore needs to capture the essence of an organization without being so vague that it could apply to every other company too. At its best a good mission statement will focus the energies of the whole organization, and their customers too, in a purposeful way. It must be true. It must engage the emotions. It must be ambitious and simple and it must be practical. How long should it be? There are no rules here. One of Nike's was "Crush Reebock". Somewhere between ten and sixty words would be usual - one or two sentences at most; something that can be lived and understood by everyone in the organization. It might say who you are, where you are heading, how you plan to get there and why this is important. Samples of Company Mission Statements IBM Our goal is simply stated. We want to be the best service organization in the world. Wal-Mart To give ordinary folk the chance to buy the same thing as rich people. Boeing (1950) Become the dominant player in commercial aircraft and bring the world into the jet age. American Probation and Parole Association We see a fair, just and safe society where community partnerships are restoring hope by embracing a balance of prevention, intervention, and advocacy. Finally, don't be put off by the task. Get something down on paper. You will then be able to refine it until it encapsulates your company's purpose and ambition.
